Project Overview

The problem is that...
When Mentr launched at the University of Michigan, it aimed to be a comprehensive mentoring service for college students. However, it soon became clear that a more focused approach was needed.

So my solution is that...
The decision to pivot towards creating a networking platform specifically for collegiate athletes necessitated a complete overhaul of the initial design.
Key Features
New Visuals - Added sports-related graphics and visual information cards to communicate new athletics mission.
Easier Connections - Utilized progressive disclosure to assist users through the booking process.
Consistent Branding - Captured Mentr's new branding by simplifying typography, brand colors, formatting, and changing the aesthetic.

Redesign Testing

What are we testing for?
Our first step was to understand the needs and preferences of our new target audience—collegiate athletes and alumni. We conducted extensive market research, reviewing university student resource webpages and sports pages. The business team provided their vision, which included connecting athletes with mentors who could offer guidance both on and off the field.

Working closely with another UX designer, we embarked on creating the foundational wireframes. This initial phase involved setting a style guide for color and typography, and designing components like profiles and the Mentr marketplace. However, the pivot to focusing on sports meant these designs needed to be reimagined.
Make the Visuals Pop
User interviews and A/B testing revealed that visually dynamic hero images significantly improved user retention.

This insight guided a major redesign, where high-contrast and dynamic images became central to our strategy, aligning the platform’s aesthetics with that of sports media.
Break Down the Chunks into Pieces
Another critical aspect was the organization of information. We needed to ensure that users could quickly understand how Mentr operated and how it benefitted them. By breaking up large chunks of information into visually digestible courses, users could view the homepage and digest information without feeling overwhelmed.

Iterative Process

Over the course of three weeks, I collaborated closely with Mentr’s founder, iterating on the landing page designs. Feedback sessions were instrumental in fine-tuning the visual identity and usability of the platform.

This iterative process was crucial in developing a final product that not only met our design standards but also resonated deeply with our target audience.

High Fidelity Development

01. Revamped homepage visuals
Added sports-related graphics and visual information cards to communicate new athletics mission.
02. Connecting with mentors made easier
Utilized progressive disclosure to assist users through the booking process.
03. Consolidated Mentr's Branding with Consistent Designs
Captured Mentr's new branding by simplifying typography, brand colors, formatting, and changing the aesthetic.

Final Deliverable:
New Mentr Website

Introducing the new Mentr website, redesigned to fit the new business direction.

The culmination of our efforts was a set of landing pages that successfully captured the interest of the UNC Tar Heels wrestling team. This achievement underscored the effectiveness of our user-centered design approach and demonstrated the platform’s potential to attract high-profile users.

Reflections

01. Clarity is key for smooth designing
Ensuring clear communication within the team and with stakeholders is crucial to avoid misunderstandings and wasted efforts. I learned how to communicate my thoughts in a straightforward manner without trying to beat around the bush.
02. Be a willow tree in the storm (have flexibility)
The ability to quickly adapt and bend to changes, such as the pivot in focus, is essential for the success of any project.

I won't lie and say it was the best of news learning we had to redesign our original project, but challenges like these are inevitable, and these experiences are what really push designers to keep a level head during unexpected changes and make the best designs possible.
03. Aim high, but be aware of engineering limitations
As a student-led startup based in at a university, we often lacked the technology/knowledge to fully realize the design visions we wanted. This meant reducing complex features into much simpler versions to accommodate the gap in resource.
