CASH APP

Bill Splitting Feature

CASH APP

Bill Splitting Feature

Cash App Bill Split

Our team conceptualized what a bill splitting feature would look like on Cash App's interface as part of a UX bootcamp assignment. Users had to calculate the split, whether it be for a large meal or a television subscription, and go through the haggle of requesting individual members of the party.

Our project sought to answer this problem by creating a more streamlined method of splitting the bill all within one app, with ways to ensure the correct amount is being transferred for each individual for their part of the split.

Project Overview

The problem is that...
Cash App users find it cumbersome to manually calculate bill splits, from large dinner orders to recurring shared subscriptions.

So our solution is to...
Design an in-app feature that streamlines the process of splitting the bill.
As per project requirements, users should be able to:
  1. Split a group of three or more
  2. Upload receipts and edit itemized receipt information
  3. Set up recurring payments for split bills like phone bills and rent
  4. Keep track of pending and completed payments
  5. Review transaction history
Key Features
Easy Transition - Users can easily swap between the main cash app page and the new bill split feature.
Automatic Subscription - Manage all subscriptions and automatically charge users who share subscriptions.
Convert Receipt to Dinner Share - Users can scan and convert dinner receipts into a digitized bill. Items on the bill can be assigned to their respective buyer.

User Flows

In order to create our solution to Cash App's hypothetical, we needed to understand the user's perspective. Our team created user flows of how Cash App users would navigate through the new bill split feature.

By studying the existing user flow, we hoped to declutter and organize information and increase overall product literacy.
From researching Cash App's current user flow for splitting a bill amongst friends, we found several steps that can be an annoyance for recurring bill splitters. We found that users have to constantly calculate and factor in multiple variables to make sure each person pays their fair share. This process would be repeated multiple times and is time consuming.

Our team was able to develop a user flow that could tackle this problem and reduce some steps users had to take to split the bill.
We also developed two other user flows that mapped how users would interact in two separate scenarios:
  1. Users share subscriptions to services with friends and want to automate the transaction at a set recurring time
  2. When the party does not want to split evenly, users want to assign each person their own purchases

Iterations & Testing

One of the initial challenges we faced was deciding how to incorporate a way for users to access the option to split bills. We iterated on the most optimal placement of buttons and tried out three variations of button placements.
Eventually, we scrapped these ideas since they cluttered the main page too much, and opted for a much more elegant solution that saved space and still served its purpose clearly.

Final Deliverable:
Cash App Bill Split Feature

Reflections

01. Learn how to defend my design decisions
When working together in a group, there will often be challenges in the design due to different perspectives. I was able to practice defending some of my decisions while learning to compromise on other parts of the project with everyone else, and was a great exercise to prepare myself for a real team dynamic.
02. Communicate fast and early
One of the challenges our group faced was learning to work around our team members' busy schedules and commitments, which sometimes made it difficult to be on the same page.

We did our best to overcome this issue by implementing a 30 minute rule on comms - when a decision is made, or an important update occurs, communicate and confirm the information within 30 minutes of receiving.
